Why Are Regular Dental Checkups & Cleanings Important?

Regular dental checkups and cleanings are important for kids for several reasons:
- Remove plaque and tartar. A professional cleaning gets rid of these harmful substances and can prevent cavities.
- Catch dental problems early on. Regular exams can allow us to identify oral health problems while they are still in their early stages. We can then provide treatment that is as conservative and minimally invasive as possible.
- Monitor oral development. If we notice developmental problems with your child’s teeth or jaws, we may refer your child to an orthodontic specialist who can help to guide the growth of their oral structures.
- Provide education. We can provide age-appropriate guidance to help children understand how to take good care of their teeth.
What to Expect During a Dental Checkup

During your child’s dental checkup, we will:
- Perform a thorough examination. This may involve taking some X-rays. We may also use exploratory tools to look for cavities and other dental problems. Our office even features intraoral cameras, which we can use to get a good look at parts of the mouth that are otherwise difficult to see.
- Propose a treatment plan. If the exam reveals any dental health problems, we can recommend a treatment plan to correct them. For example, some children need fillings for cavities.
- Have a conversation with you. We will be happy to answer your questions, and we may ask you some questions relevant to your child’s health so we can understand how best to care for them.
What to Expect During a Dental Cleaning

During your child’s dental cleaning, a hygienist will use special instruments to remove plaque and tartar from their teeth. We always try to be gentle during this process, but your child still might experience a small degree of pressure and discomfort as we work. (The better your child’s at-home oral hygiene is, the easier the cleaning process will be for them.) We will also floss their teeth and polish them.
A cleaning may also include the application of a topical fluoride treatment. Fluoride is a naturally occurring mineral that has been shown to play a key role in the development of children’s teeth. It can also help to restore lost bits of tooth enamel and lower the risk of cavities.
