Invisalign is an orthodontic method that can bring a smile into a better alignment without the conspicuous metal parts or the inconvenient dietary restrictions that come with traditional metal braces. The brand is backed by decades of science, and treatments can often be completed in much shorter timeframes than those associated with traditional orthodontic methods. However, patients can sometimes have difficulty getting a new aligner to fit properly. Here are a few tips to get your aligners in position so your treatment can stay on track!
How Should My Invisalign Clear Aligners Fit?
Invisalign clear aligners should fit smoothly and snugly over the teeth from day one, though it may take a while to get used to the feeling of wearing them. When you put a new aligner in, you may find some small gaps between the aligner and the teeth. As you continue to wear this aligner, these gaps should close as your teeth move into better alignment. By the time it’s time to switch to the next aligner in the sequence, any gaps between the current one and your teeth should have disappeared.
Why Is My Clear Aligner Refusing to Fit Properly?
Especially if you’re still getting used to wearing aligners, you might find that you’re having a hard time getting them to fit properly. Perhaps your aligner is repeatedly popping off your molars or having difficulty fitting one or more teeth. Here are a few reasons your aligners might have difficulty fitting properly:
- You’ve just put in a new set of aligners: When you’re wearing a new set of aligners, your teeth haven’t had any time to adapt to it yet. Massage your aligners down their length and they should start fitting more securely until your teeth shift into place.
- You haven’t been wearing your aligners for twenty-two hours a day: If you don’t wear your aligners enough, nothing will be pushing your teeth into their new positions. Neglecting to wear your aligners for a minimum of twenty-two hours a day can cause significant delays in your treatment. Only remove your aligners to eat, drink, brush, and floss.
- Your aligners are damaged: If your aligners crack or warp, they won’t be able to exert the precise pressure needed to shift your teeth properly. Avoid washing them with hot water or drinking hot liquids while wearing them.
How Can I Get My Invisalign Aligners to Fit Correctly?
When you put an aligner in, push it down over your front teeth first and then apply pressure toward the molars until it snaps into place. Then apply pressure along all the surfaces of your aligner using your thumb to completely seal it over your teeth. You can also buy Invisalign chewies, devices that are specially designed to eliminate gaps between your aligners and your teeth as you chew on them.
As you continue to wear Invisalign, you’ll become better at getting your clear aligners to fit properly. Stick with the program and you’ll be on your way to better alignment and a more beautiful smile in no time!
